First it was Patrick Towles. Now Phillips.

Towles is heading to Boston College as a fifth-year graduate transfer who will be eligible to compete for the Eagles' starting job immediately.

Now, Cats Illustrated sources can confirm, quarterback Reese Phillips is planning to transfer as well.

Phillips' decision to seek and obtain his release from UK leaves a thin depth chart at quarterback. Drew Barker will be the obvious starter as a redshirt sophomore next year. He started the final two games of his redshirt freshman season in the fall. Incoming true freshman Gunnar Hoak will enroll a semester early but he will be the only other scholarship quarterback if the current situation holds.

Walk-on quarterback Davis Mattingly has been praised by some Cats Illustrated sources, and there's a strong possibility that Kentucky's coaches could move to bring on another scholarship quarterback. That becomes a virtual necessity with Phillips' decision and Towles' departure, and the fact that Kentucky will be bringing in a new offensive coordinator makes it more likely that the staff will improve the depth chart at the position.
